Lot Essay

Cranes, as symbols of longevity, were a popular motif on Chinese ceramics. The design of this jar known as 'hundred cranes' was very auspicious.
This technique of white motifs reserved on blue ground was a feature of mid-Yuan and Xuande wares. It fell during the later 15th and early 16th and became popular again in the Jiaqing and Wanli periods.
See a similar jar is in the collection of the Kau Chi Society of Chinese Art, illustrated in Exhibition of Ancient Chinese Ceramics, (The Chinese University of Hong Kong, 1981), no. 88.
A very similar example from The Manno Art Museum, Osaka, Japan was sold in our Hong Kong Rooms, 27 May 2008, lot 1861
