Cranes, as symbols of longevity, were a popular motif on Chinese ceramics. The design of this jar known as 'hundred cranes' was very auspicious.
This technique of white motifs reserved on blue ground was a feature of mid-Yuan and Xuande wares. It fell during the later 15th and early 16th and became popular again in the Jiaqing and Wanli periods.
