THE DELUXE EDITION, LIMITED TO 500 COPIES, AND THE FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION, describing the flowers, fruits, and trees of the Philippines. The present edition is in effect the third edition of the pioneer work by the Spanish priest, explorer and botanist Francisco Blanco, who lived in the Philippines for 40 years working as a priest in various parts of the country and collecting plant specimens as he traveled. Flora Filipinas was first published in Manila in a small quarto volume in 1837 with a second edition published in 1845, both of which were not illustrated. Blanco's text is here expanded and amended and includes the many fine chromolithographic illustrations. This edition was issued in two formats: an "edición económic" with the plates uncolored and numbered, and the present limited "edición de lujo" with colored plates. A previous owner of this copy clearly wished to enhance the work's usability by the addition of the typed identifications on each plate. BM(NH) I, p.172; Nissen BBI 170; Palau 30214; Stafleu & Cowan 553. (8)
