FIRST EDITION of volume II part one of the Opera Botanica from the library of Philip Miller, "the most important horticultural writer of the eighteenth century" (DSB, IX, p. 390). He was appointed curator of the Chelsea Physic Garden in 1722, and under his careful and skilful stewardship it became one of the most important gardens of its type in Europe, famous for the wealth of species assembled by Miller, who was dubbed "hortulanorum princeps" by his contemporaries.
