FIRST EDTITION. Newton, a devoted botanist and physician who ran an asylum for the insane in London, began his herbal in 1680 but died before it was completed. It was published posthumously by his grandson, James, Rector of Nuneham, and went through several editions by 1805. In addition to the plates each illustrating 10 to 15 plants, A Compleat Herbal consists of a dedication to Earl Harcourt, a table of authors cited in the work, a preface, and an index of plants. Based on its text, the book seems to have been published for the purpose of identifying botanical specimens in the field. Henrey 1163.
