Lot Essay

Cette sculpture s'inspire du marbre antique découvert vers 1623 (conservé au Musée du Capitole à Rome) original grec réalisé vers 210/200 av. J. C. (Haskell et Penny,loc. cit). Cette sculpture très célèbre fût, au cours des siècles, reproduite de nombreuses fois: Louis XIV en commanda un exemplaire en marbre pour Versailles qui fut exécuté par Michel Monnier en 1684, d'autres exemplaires furent réalisés durant tout le XVIIIème siècle: en pierre (par Pierre de Scheemakers en 1743), en marbre (par Simon Vierpyl en 1769, pour Lord Pembroke au château de Wilton) et en bronze (par Luigi Valadier en 1773, pour le Duc de Northumberland à Syon House).
