Sujet récurrent dans l'oeuvre de Calvaert, le présent dessin est probablement préparatoire à une huile sur cuivre passée en vente chez Sotheby's (Monaco, 30 juin 1995, lot 4). Une autre version de cette Annonciation, également sur cuivre, est datée 1585 (Italian Paintings from the Burghley House, cat. expo., H. Brigstocke, J. Sommerville, Alexandria, 1995, pp. 50-51, no. 5).
