Lot Essay

In 1967, after becoming bored of his standard finish black Rolls-Royce John Lennon decided to get it customised. The car was re-painted with a psychedelic design, inspired by traditional gypsy caravan that stood at the bottom of his garden. The 'psychedelic' design was painted by the artist David Sullivan, at J.P. Fallon (Coachworks), Chertsey, Surrey in May 1967. These photographs were taken at the coachworks' premises before Lennon took delivery of the car.
