The vendor obtained this signature from Lennon directly while she worked as an editor on the film Imagine, at the Regency Hotel, New York in 1971.

Lennon's inscription Medium is the Message was a phrase coined by Marshall McLuhan in his book Understanding Media, where he believed that the form of the media was more important than the message itself.
