NOUVEAU TESTAMENT, avec les prologues attribués à St Jerôme, en latin, MANUSCRIT ENLUMINé SUR VéLIN
[Paris, vers 1275] 150 x 105 mm. 178 + i feuillets, texte disposé sur deux colonnes, 34 lignes d'une écriture gothique de petit module à l'encre brune, ligné à la mine de plomb, justification: 101 x 26-6-29 mm, titres et numéros alternativement en rouge et en bleu, initiales (3 lignes) dans les marges alternativement en bleu et en rouge, en tête de chaque chapitre, orné d'arabesques de mêmes couleurs sur la hauteur de la page, 20 GRANDES INITIALES ENLUMINÉES aux débuts des prologues et 28 GRANDES INITIALES HISTORIÉES enluminées en rose, bleu, argent et or au début de chaque livre (argent légèrement oxydé, premiers deux feuillets légèrement brunis, quelques feuillets avec petite déchirure, quelques guirlandes très légèrement touchées par le couteau du relieur, quelques rares pliures.) Maroquin rouge à long grain, reliure française du XIXe siècle, dos à nerfs, tranches dorées (une garde détachée). Provenance: Tobias W. Gutberleth, avec son nom en pied du premier feuillet, probablement soit le Recteur de l'Ecole Latine de Ljouwert (1609-1662) ou le jurisconsulte et erudit hollandais (1675-1703) -- Charles Cousin (ex-libris, vente à Paris, 7-11 avril 1891, lot 7).
Le mélange de grandes initiales florales des débuts de chapitres et de belles initiales enluminées à la fois florales et historisantes, rehaussées d'argent et à l'or, rendent cet exemplaire du Nouveau Testament extrêmement décoratif et séduisant. Un grand nombre d'initiales sont peuplées de dragons ou de lions ailés et chaque livre s'ouvre avec une initiale exécutée dans un style semblable à celui qui est associé par Branner avec l'atelier de Soissons qui, semble-t-il, était spécialisé dans les illustrations bibliques. Il est probable que le présent exemplaire ait été conçu comme une bible complète, mais le Nouveau Testament a visiblement été relié séparément depuis le XVIIe siècle.

[Paris, 3rd quarter 13th century]
150 x 105mm. 178 + i leaves, two columns of 34 lines in brown ink in a small gothic bookhand between 4 verticals and 35 horizontals ruled in plummet, justification: 101 x 26-6-29mm, rubrics in red chapter numbers and running headings in letters alternately red and blue, each chapter opening with a red or blue initial in the margin 3-lines high and with flourishing of both colours the height of the page, TWENTY ILLUMINATED INITIALS open the Prologues and TWENTY-EIGHT HISTORIATED INITIALS in pink, blue, red, silver and gold open the biblical books (oxidization to some of the silver, darkening of first two leaves, a few folios with cut or tear to a marginal crease, slight cropping of flourishing at top and bottom edges, inconsequential creases). French 19th-century red straight-grained morocco gilt with gilt edges (one marbled endpaper loose). Provenance: Tobias W. Gutberleth, his ownership inscription on first folio, probably either the rector of the Latin school in Ljouwert (1609-1662) or the Dutch jurisconsul and scholar (1675-1703); Charles Cousin (1822-1894) collector and bibliophile, his engraved ex libris on front endleaf and lot 7 in his sale, Paris, Hôtel Drouot, 7-11 avril 1891.
The combination of extensively flourished chapter initials and illuminated initials, both foliate and historiated, enhanced with burnished silver and gold make this an exceptionally decorative and attractive New Testament. Many of the initials include small dragons or winged lions and each Biblical book opens with a finely executed initial in a style similar to that associated by Branner with the Soissons atelier, a shop that seemed to concentrate on Bible illustration: R. Branner, Manuscript Painting in Paris in the time of Saint Louis (1977), pp.77-78 & 216-217. It may originally have been intended as part of a one-volume Bible but it has clearly been independently bound since at least the 17th century.
