Lot Essay

Another drawing of the same composition, which was the source for Bartolozzi's 1764 print and which was formerly in Consul Smith's collection and is now at Windsor Castle, is listed by D. Mahon and N. Turner as School of Guercino (D. Mahon and N. Turner, The Drawings of Guercino in the collection of Her Majesty The Queen at Windsor Castle, Cambridge, 1989, p. 150, no. 466, pl. 343). Mahon and Turner mention another drawing of the same subject formerly at Düsseldorf and etched in reverse (published by T. Bislinger, 1781). It is not possible, however, to be sure it if this is the present lot.
We are grateful to Nicholas Turner for his assistance in cataloguing this drawing.
