Lot Essay

The present drawing is particularly close in subject and style to the Round tower and a bridge in the Fondation Custodia, Paris (inv. 484B; K.G. Boon, The Netherlandish and German Drawings of the XVth and XVIth Centuries of the Frits Lugt Collection, Paris, 1992, no. 178, pl. 259). The same features reappear in both drawings, particularly the handling of the shading and the design of the windows. These early drawings show Roelandt's elder brother Jacob's influence.
