Lot Essay

Euclid (fl.300 BC) was an ancient Greek mathematician and is referred to as the Father of Geometry. Agar's composition could be viewed as an exploratory work examining the possibilities of laying 'bare' the components of her art - the pared down line, intersecting shapes, textured photo-collage layer and use of predominantly primary colours are the set of axioms or elements she deploys to achieve visual harmony or Beauty. The present work dates from 1942, the year of her solo exhibition at the Redfern Gallery, London.
