Lot Essay

Holland & Sons were among the most distinguished furniture producers of the Victorian period, starting as Taprell and Holland at the beginning of the 19th Century, and becoming Holland & Sons in 1843. This writing table formed part of the bedroom furnishings at Eaton Hall, commissioned by the 1st Duke of Westminster under the guidance of his architect Alfred Waterhouse. Construction began in 1870, was not completed until 1882, and was rumoured to have cost in excess of 600,000 pounds.
