Lot Essay

William Clayton, 1st Baron Sundon, was MP for Woodstock, St Albans, Westminster, Plympton Erle and St Mawes. Another, later portrait of the sitter by Kneller, dated 1719, is now in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, another version of which is also in the Government Art Collection, London.
