Lot Essay

Violet Beddington was the sister of author Ada Leverson who was known to Oscar Wilde as The Sphinx. Violet married Sydney Schiff who was better known as Stephen Hudson, the British author. They were entrenched in the artistic social circle of the time, associated with the likes of Picasso, Proust and Wyndham Lewis. She was also painted by Wyndham Lewis (now in the Tate and exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery's Wyndham Lewis exhibition last year).
