Lot Essay

Gertrud Kijzer-Lanz was the daughter of the collector Otto Lanz and the daughter in law of Rudolf Kijzer, one of the first collectors to appreciate the art of his contemporaries of the Hague School. Rudolf Kijzer became a close friend of Josef Israels and owned many oils and watercolours by other masters of the Hague School as well. (For more information on Kijzer, see Ph. Zilcken in Vereeniging tot bevordering van Beeldende Kunsten, 1898). Gertrud and her husband themselves were close friends with Max Beckmann.
