JAMES ('Jim') RICHARDSON GIBSON between 1881 until his death in 1909, lived in Egypt, mainly in Cairo, working for the Commissioners for the States Domain, who were responsible for over a quarter of a million acres of land taken over from the Khedive Ismail who had fled the country leaving 8 million pounds of debt. James held various positions such as the Director General of Surveys, Egypt and in 1886, he became the British Commissioner, Egyptian State Domains.
It is during this period that James Gibson acquired this collection of paintings.
James returned for his home leaves to The Manor House in Felpham, a house which he had previously bought in 1863 for his widowed grand-mother, Catherine Gibson. His great nephew, the late Michael Copeman, also lived at the Manor House, the latter inheriting his Great Uncle Jim's 'Egyptian Collection'.
James died in March 1909 and is buried in the Gibson/Clayton family graves at Felpham Church.
