Lot Essay

After figures from Vouet's painting on the ceiling of the Library at the Hôtel Séguier, which was engraved by Michel Dorigny in 1640. The composition of the present drawing reverses that of the engraving, and the artist has added a figure between the nymph and the river god who does not appear in the original painting (W.R. Crelly, The Painting of Simon Vouet, New Haven and London, 1962, fig. 145).
