Lot Essay

Robert executed two known pictures of this scene, both showing the monk preaching from the right-hand side of the composition (formerly with Knoedler, London, and G. Wildenstein, Paris, respectively; photographs in the Witt Library, Courtauld Institute of Art, London). The drawing from which this counter-proof derives was sold in these Rooms, 15 April 1980, lot 160.
