Elijah Walton was predominantly known as a landscape painter. From 1860, on the death of his first wife, until 1867, he spent a large proportion of his time sketching in Egypt and the Middle East. The present portrait is likely to date to this same period: two similar portraits of Arabs were sold as a pair at Bonham's, London, 17 December 2008, lot 84.
