Lot Essay

The combination of tiger stripe and flame is unusual. Compare the child's kaftan in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A744-1884) in which flames and sickle moons are woven in claret velvet on an ivory ground and the fragment of a pair of trousers inventory number 13/407 in the Topkapi Museum, Istanbul. This design has an Italianate feel to the composition of stripes and flames.
