According to Chinese legend, the yellow river carp travelled upstream to overcome the rapids of the Lung-Men (Dragon Gate), where they were magically transformed into glorious dragons. This became a metaphor for young scholars working to pass the civil service exams to become a high official. The motif is considered a favourite of the Kangxi Emperor who had a keen interest in learning and reorganized the Academy to allow young talents the opportunity to sit the exams.
