of rectangular form with indented corners, decorated in red, brown, black and cream lacquer, the raised central panel of the cover with an incised peony flowerhead and stylised floral sprays, the similar four narrow side panels all on a red lacquer ground with ochre wan fret embellishment, the raised rims with incised key-fret on a black lacquer ground, later Wanli gilt six-character mark to base -- 9.3.4in. (24.7cm.) wide.
