Lot Essay

Helleu often sketched his wife Alice and his children Ellen, Jean and Paulette, who appear in some of his most intimate and charming drawings. The present work shows the artist's daughter Ellen, whom he had drawn many times throughout her childhood, and who is represented here on the brink of maturity, with all the elegance of one of Helleu's society sitters.
