Dear Client,

Welcome to the first wine sale of the autumn season for NYWinesChristie's North America. It is with a mixture of excitement and relief that I look forward to this season after the tumultuous events of 2008 and early 2009. It's certainly natural to breathe a sigh of relief after the reassuring season this past spring. After the winter's price correction, one sensed a surge of renewed interest in auction of fine and rare wines. As prices dipped, buyers flocked to salerooms (or virtual salerooms, as online sales continue to grow exponentially) certainly an encouraging development.

I also feel a keen sense of excitement at the variety and sheer quality of the wine on offer this season. In this sale, and throughout the fall, we present a combination of unique rarities and well-priced classics. The sale opens with a brace of impressive horizontal offerings of the 2005, 2003, and 2000 vintages in Bordeaux, with all of the first growths and other top properties offered in full cases in wood. This is followed by a similar array from the wonderful 2005 vintage in Burgundy.

These Old World classics are followed by wines of great depth and variety from California: Screaming Eagle, Harlan, Marcassin, Colgin, Dunn and many others, as well as a lovely selection from the 2002 harvest in Burgundy.

The heart of the sale is a breathtaking cache of the top wines from Bordeaux from the best vintages from 1945 - 1982, allied with a selection of DRC from vintages old and young. Both assortments offer selections in bottles, magnums, and larger formats as well. In truth, nothing is missing in this sale, from champagne to dessert wines, from the New World to the Old. This sale will be a great occasion for collectors to line their cellars with the some of the greatest wines of the past half-century.

Enjoy,

A DAZZLING ARRAY OF THE WORLD'S FINEST BORDEAUX, BURGUNDY AND CALIFORNIA

Lots 1 to 171 offer much of what the world's fine wine lovers desire in a collection: Bordeaux from only the best vintages young and old (2005, 2003, 2000, 1989, 1986, 1985, 1982), Burgundy from top producers like de Vogüé, DRC and Roumier, and California classics from Montelena, Stag's Leap and Opus.

When Christie's specialists arrived at the custom-built, temperature-controlled home cellar of this consignor, we were pleased to see that everything had been stored meticulously. The wines that are offered in original cases and cartons never, with few exceptions, left those containers. The cellar was clean and organized, denoting a man who cared profoundly about his wine collection. Bid with confidence.

2005 Bordeaux

2005 is a year that showcased the most appealing and friendly aspects of Bordeaux without lacking the classic structure that pleases traditionalists. The year was sunny, mild, and very dry, with only 48 of the precipitation of the average.

These exceptional conditions produced truly extraordinary wine: ripe, lush, and velvety, yet packed with the tannin and enough acidity to allow the best of them to age gracefully for half a century. Charles Curtis, MW
