In 1951, at the age of 19, Denise Arokas left her home town of Avignon for Paris. Shortly after her arrival, she met Lydia Delectorskaya, Henri Matisse's companion, who offered her a job as the aging artist's nurse in Nice. Over the following year, Arokas would become the artist's muse, acting as the model in several important works, including the large collage 'La tristesse du Roi' (Muse National d'Art Moderne, Pompidou Centre). The following three lots were gifts from the artist and bear affectionate dedications in his hand.
