THE PROPERTY OF THE EARL GRANVILLE (LOTS 264-268) Granville Leveson-Gower (1773-1846), 1st Earl Granville of the second creation of that title, was the son of the 1st Marquess of Stafford and an extremely distinguished Whig politician and diplomat. His siblings provided him with the best connections; his brother was the 1st Duke of Sutherland; one half sister became the Duchess of Beaufort and another, the Countess of St. Germans. Described as one of the handsomest men of his generation by the society hostess, Lady Holland, the young aristocrat embarked upon his Grand Tour in 1794. The majority of the property was sold at Christie's in the Style & Spirit sale, 12th May 2009.

Crossbanded and banded overall, the three-quarter pierced galleried oval top inlaid with two putto each holding fighting birds, the frieze sides with flower head filled trellis border and chequer bands, with a gilt-tooled green leather slide and drawer, on cabriole legs on sabot feet and hardwood castors, extensive losses
30¾ in. (78 cm.) high; 16 in. (40.5 cm.) wide; 22 in. (56cm.) diameter

Lot Essay

A similar chiffonnière attributed to Jean-Pierre Dusautoy was sold at Christie's, London, 25 March 1999, lot 174. In turn this was related to a group of tables en chiffonnière which are either stamped by or attributed to Jean-Pierre Dusautoy. Two related tables en chiffonnière are illustrated in F. J. B. Watson, The Wrightsman Collection, 1966, vol. 1, no. 138 and 140, pp. 277 and 280. Another related breccia marble top table, from the Estate of Joseph Gruss, was sold at Christie's New York, 24 April 1994, lot 263.
