The first Nara period (8th century) wood, later assembled; the second Edo period (possibly 17th century) incised with maker's name Kyui
The first assembled in a square of four pieces of wood from pillars in the colonnade of Horyuji Temple, sawtooth corner mortises, interior rough and exterior planed flat, burned into the wood with branded reserve on upper surface with the name Horyuji; the second assembled of four slats planed smooth on exterior surfaces, rectangular corner mortises, surface polished deep brown to high sheen
