Lot Essay

The Soga school was established by Soga Chokuan (act. 1596-1610), and his son Nichokuan (act. first half 17th c.) continued the style. For a similar screen by Soga Chokuan, see Nara Prefectural Museum of Art, ed., Soga Chokuan-Nichokuan no kaiga/Paintings of Soga Chokuan and Nichokuan (Nara: Nara Prefectural Museum of Art, 1989), pl. 8.
