The artist was celebrated for his extensive knowledge of Confucianism, Daoism and Buddhism. He was active in conservative politics, and took part in the resistance movement during the Japaense occupation of Korea from 1910 to 1945. As a painter, he followed the traditional literati style characterized by refined elegance. He was also very prolific.
