AN UNUSUAL BRONZE FITTING
WESTERN ZHOU DYNASTY, 10TH-9TH CENTURY BC
Hollow cast, of spreading, flattened elliptical section with two holes in the flat top, each side cast in intaglio with a taotie mask and in relief with eyes and a diamond-shaped boss, below a tapering crest cast with scales, with traces of inlay; together with a bronze tubular axle cap, Western Zhou dynasty, cast in relief at the broad end with two dragons reserved on leiwen grounds confronted on two rectangular openings, above four blades, with a small coiled dragon on the flat end
