AN UNUSUAL GREYISH-GREEN AND BROWN JADE OVOID BEAD
LATE EASTERN ZHOU/HAN DYNASTY, 3RD-1ST CENTURY BC
Carved in high relief around the sides with a chilong crawling through the cloud scrolls carved on the sides, two of the projecting legs creating small loops, with a narrow central channel drilled from both ends, the stone of pale greenish-grey color with brown markings
1½ in. (3.8 cm.) high

Lot Essay

It is very rare to find a jade bead carved in high relief with a sinuous chilong. They are more commonly found on jade sword fittings of the Eastern Zhou/Han period, such as the those excavated from the Western Han tomb of Liu Sheng, Prince of Zhongshan, Mancheng, Hebei province, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Jades Unearthed in China - 1 - Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Beijing, 2005, p. 189.
