A RARE JADE AND HARDSTONE-EMBELLISHED ZITAN RUYI SCEPTER
18TH/19TH CENTURY
The zitan handle in the shape of a gnarled stem carved in high openwork relief on top with subsidiary branches bearing heads of lingzhi fungus in white and green jade, amethyst, lapis lazuli, and three kinds of agate, the large fungus head at the top carved from semi-translucent green jade
17 in. (43.2 cm.) long, fitted box

Acquired circa 1960s-1974, and thence by descent within the family.

Compare the wood ruyi scepter in the Palace Museum, Beijing, similarly carved as a gnarled branch bearing lingzhi heads inlaid in various hardstones, illustrated in The Palace Museum Collection of Elite Carvings, Beijing, 2002, p. 150, no. 109.
