A PAIR OF FRAMED 'DREAMSTONE' WALL PLAQUES
18TH/19TH CENTURY
One of horizontal format, the warm ivory stone with black and grey markings, with an inscription comparing the mottling of the stone to a bird in flight before sunset; the other of vertical format, the stone of ivory tone with muted brown inclusions resembling a mountain range, entitled Shan Yi Xiang Qiu Duo after a Jin dynasty poem by Yuan Haowen, and with two lengthy inscriptions after Gong Shitai (1298-1362) and the Tang poet Ma Dai
Each 23 1/8 x 18 in. (58.7 x 45.7 cm.) framed

Acquired by the grandfather of the present owners, Whampoa, Guangdong, circa 1890-1920s, thence by descent within the family.

Lot Essay

The inscription on the first panel was composed by Ruan Yuan (1764-1849) at the Langhuan Studio, referenced in the seal inscribed at the bottom left. The second panel also bears Ruan Yuan's collector's seal. Also known as Boyuan, Ruan Yuan was a well-known scholar/official who passed his jinshi examination in 1789, and was subsequently appointed to the Hanlin Academy. He was famous for his literary work, Biographies of Astronomers and Mathematicians.
