AN UNUSUAL FAMILLE ROSE YELLOW-GROUND BOWL
DAOGUANG PERIOD (1821-1850)
With rounded sides, decorated on the exterior in blue enamel with formal lotus scroll beneath the Eight Buddhist Emblems (bajixiang), each beribboned in bright colors below the gilt rim and all on a lemon-yellow ground, the interior enameled white, as is the base surrounding a four-character mark, Xie zhu zhu zao ('Made for the Master of the Xie Bamboo')

Lot Essay

According to G. Davison, The Handbook of Marks on Chinese Ceramics, London, 1994, Xie means 'cutting', and is the name of a valley in the Kunlun mountains. It is said that there during the reign of "The Yellow Emperor" Huangdi, thought to have reigned between 2490-2413 BC, the "first musical scale was made from varying lengths of cut bamboo."
