According to G. Davison, The Handbook of Marks on Chinese Ceramics, London, 1994, Xie means 'cutting', and is the name of a valley in the Kunlun mountains. It is said that there during the reign of "The Yellow Emperor" Huangdi, thought to have reigned between 2490-2413 BC, the "first musical scale was made from varying lengths of cut bamboo."
