Lot Essay

This set of four chairs are copies after the remaining set of seven armchairs originally made by Georges Jacob in 1785 for Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), principal author of the Declaration of Independence and third President of the United States, and now on display at Monticello, Charlottesville, Virginia.

The present copies were made in Paris in 1994 for the Merchant Ivory Production 'Jefferson in Paris' (1995), and upholstered in the identical cherry red damask as the originals at Monticello. The film is a semi-fictional account of Jefferon's tenure as the Ambassador of the United States to France prior to the French Revolution. The film starred Nick Nolte, Greta Scacchi, Thandie Newton, Simon Callow and Gwyneth Paltrow.
