Recently discovered in Spain, this table was originally found in Trinidad, Cuba. It is likely that this piece traveled as part of a flourishing venture cargo trade between New York and various islands in the south. There are apparent similarities between the present lot and the table by a New York maker in figure 2 (Peter M. Kenny, Honoré Lannuier: Cabinetmaker from Paris (New York, 1998), Figure 51, p. 95). Both clearly inspired by Lannuier's iconic style, they share details such as a shaped base plinth, molded top and a winged caryatid figure. For another similar example see Elizabeth Bidwell Bates and Jonathan L. Fairbank's American Furniture, 1620 to the Present (New York, 1981), p. 266.
