Sultan Mahmud is recorded as being one of the pupils of 'Ali Reza, alive in AH 995/1586-87 AD. His other recorded works include a copy of selections from the Bustan of Sa'di dated AH 957/1550 AD recorded by Bayani as well as a copy of the Guy o Chaugan (Ball and Mallet) of 'Arifi dated AH 950/1543-44 AD, which sold in these Rooms, 7 October 2008, lot 342. Bayani writes of Sultan Mahmud that he was a skilled calligrapher (Mehdi Bayani, Ahval va Asar-e Khosh Nevisan, Vol. III, Tehran, 1348 sh., p. 884).
