Persian manuscript on gold-speckled paper, with 4ll. of black nasta'liq written on the diagonal in cloud bands on gold ground, two triangular panels above and below, one signed and dated, with two triangular illuminated cartouches, laid down on card between gold illuminated borders, slight staining

Lot Essay

Sultan Mahmud is recorded as being one of the pupils of 'Ali Reza, alive in AH 995/1586-87 AD. His other recorded works include a copy of selections from the Bustan of Sa'di dated AH 957/1550 AD recorded by Bayani as well as a copy of the Guy o Chaugan (Ball and Mallet) of 'Arifi dated AH 950/1543-44 AD, which sold in these Rooms, 7 October 2008, lot 342. Bayani writes of Sultan Mahmud that he was a skilled calligrapher (Mehdi Bayani, Ahval va Asar-e Khosh Nevisan, Vol. III, Tehran, 1348 sh., p. 884).
