A Dutch Delft blue and white biblical garniture
Second half 18th Century, marked in underglaze blue for Pieter Paree at de Metalen Pot
(Kaststel) Depicting a transaction in the desert, with Joseph sold by his brothers to the Egyptians (Genesis 37), further with four camels behind four children, one with a stick, a further chap giving money to various elder men holding a large stick, further with a male figure seated on a barrel, underneath trellised foliage, within a rocaille frame in slight relief and with flower-sprays, comprising: one pair of beaker vases - circa 31.5cm. high and three baluster vases and cover, the covers en suite with a large bird pecking a fruit finial - 43cm. high (5)

Lot Essay

Camels in the Desert appear in the Old Testament in connection with Joseph "sold by his brothers". This is considered a prefiguration for the Entombment and the Resurrection of Christ
