Lot Essay

To produce panoramas for his Habitat 7 project, Jeff Liao combined color film negatives into digital prints. The present lot is part of this series which traces the 7 train subway line from Queens to Manhattan. Pictured here is 5 Points, an open air graffiti mecca on a city sized block of warehouse space. Painting there is legal and to gain access one signs up. Artwork lasts for roughly a week before it is painted over. The location is fittingly located across the street from P.S.1, the alternative art space run by The Museum of Modern Art.
Liao will participate in a three person show next year at The Getty called: Urban Panoramas: Opie, Liao, Kim, February 2- June 6, 2010.
