Weston adored cats. At the time he made this photograph he had ten of them. Naturally, he made many photographs of his beloved cats. While preparing his 1946 retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, he wrote to the curator Nancy Newhall to urge her not to eliminate all the cat photographs and he described the present lot as 'my best cat portrait.' Weston got his way and Johnny graced the walls of MoMA.
