Lot Essay

Andrew Johnson (1808-1875) was the 17th President of the United States (1865-69), succeeding to the Presidency upon the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. He was the first President to be impeached.
Brady's image depicts the Managers of the House of Representatives during Johnson's troubled Presidency. Left to right they are as follows: Benjamin F. Butler (Mass.); James F. Wilson (Iowa); Thaddeus Stevens (Penn.); George S. Boutwell (Mass.); Thomas Williams (Penn.); John A Logan (Ill.); and JNO Bingham (Ohio).
