Lot Essay

The pinnacle of Windsor chair design is undoubtedly the Gothic windsor chair. This, now uncommon, type of Windsor was always made in the prized yew-tree timber with an elm seat. Inspired by the Gothic revival of the 18th century as epitomised by the Strawberry Hill home of Horace Walpole, the back is formed as a pointed arch and additionally incorporates pierced gothic arch underarm splats.
