In the Empire style, each with scrolling acanthus and palmette back plate projecting a winged herm holding aloft a torch with central light above two tiers with twelve scrolling branches cast with scrolling foliage and male masks, broad drip-pans and flaming nozzles

Lot Essay

The back plates of these wall-lights are virtually identical to a pair in the Grand Trianon at Versailles, which were supplied by Antoine-André Ravrio to the cabinet of Napoleon in 1813. (H. Ottomeyer/P. Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, Vol.I, p. 356, fig. 5.10.5)
