Lot Essay

The combination of the full-faced putto with the windswept hair and the symmetrical scrolling decoration suggest an origin in the first part of the 18th Century in Italy. The putto in particular may be compared to the work of such sculptors as Agostino Cornacchini (1683-circa1740) whose marble group of 'La Speranza' in the Cappella del Monte di Pieta in Rome includes two very similar putti.
