A PAIR OF ELEGANT DIAMOND BOW EARCLIPS, BY JAR

Each designed as a blackened precious metal grosgrain ribbon-knot bow with pavé-set diamond detail, circa 1984
Signed by JAR, Paris

Joel Arthur Rosenthal, the American-born jewellery designer has, for the past seventeen years, worked in Paris. He signs his unique jewels JAR. Mr. Rosenthal is one of the most original of the designers in the current renaissance of jewellery design; he is notable for having increased the visual vocabulary of the jewel. His pieces are instantly identifiable for their limpid classicism, their secrets, such as a diamond cunningly set in the back of a brooch, so only the owner knows that it is there, allied to an adventurous use of colour. His chosen palette is the rich and vivid spectrum of unusually-coloured precious stones, such as shocking pink sapphires and blue diamonds, together with unusual semi-precious stones such as green amethysts and demantoid garnets. Mr. Rosenthal blends these rare gems with a sure touch into pieces of virtuosity and originality, inspired by his observations of nature and by painters who have influenced him, amongst whom are Velasquez, Vermeer and Sargent. Pieces signed "JAR" are, above all, wearable and most have been designed or made to special commissions to suit a particular individual. So prized are these jewels by their owners that pieces signed "JAR" have only come up at auction nine times in the past seventeen years. These witty ribbon-knot bows, or precious black metal and diamonds are noteworthy because they are one of the rare JAR designs in monochrome.
