A PAIR OF APULIAN RED-FIGURED KANTHAROI
ATTRIBUTED TO THE CHARIOT GROUP, CIRCA 330-300 B.C.
The obverse of one with a youth (Dionysus?) riding a biga to the right, holding the reins in his left hand, a goad in his right, a pelt tied around his neck, a bird flying above; the reverse with Eros seated to the right looking left, holding a situla and a lidded box with an alabastron in his left hand, a string and ball of yarn in his right; dotted ovolo below on the obverse and the edge of the rim, tongues on the underside of the rim; the obverse of the other with an Amazon driving a biga to the left, wearing a belted chiton, a pelt and a crested helmet, holding the reins in her right hand, a pelta shield with a facing head in her left, a bird flying above; the reverse with winged Eros seated to the left, bejewelled in beaded chains, holding a situla and a phiale supporting a swan in his right hand, a wreath in his left; dotted ovolo below and on the rim, tongues on the underside of the rim; both with female heads molded in relief on the base and top of the heads molded in relief on the base and top of the handles, handles, details in added white and yellow
