One of the finest draughtsmen of his time, George Wilhelm Timm (1820-1895) adopted the Russian name of Vasilii Feodorovich Timm, often signing his exquisite drawings and watercolours as 'Vasia Timm'. A Russian artist, illustrator and lithographer of German descent, Timm is renowned for his detailed depictions of the Crimean War and for capturing moments from the Imperial family's travels around the Caucasus and Crimea. Many of Timm's travel sketches were reproduced in the seminal Khudozhestvennyi listok ('The art newspaper'), which was published three times a month from 1851 to 1862, with contributions from Ivan Aivazovsky, Aleksei Bogoliubov and Mikhail Zichy.
