A PORCELAIN PORTRAIT CUP AND SAUCER
by the Yusupov Manufactory, Archangelsk, 1826
The cylindrical cup painted en grisaille with a portrait of General A. P. Melissino, in a rectangular reserve with cut corners, the white ground with gilt borders and stylized decoration of rosettes and laurel highlighted in red, the saucer similarly decorated, gilt handle and rims, marked under bases with gilt 'Archangelski 1826' and various incised marks

Lot Essay

Alexei Petrovich Melissino (1759-1813) was a Russian general who took action at the taking of Ismael of 1789. In 1812, he was a commander of the cavalry brigade in the army of Tormasoff. He died a year later in Dresden.
