Lot Essay

After commencing his artistic career under the tutelage of the Russian Impressionist painter Konstantin Iuon, Aleksandr Arnshtam furthered his studies in Switzerland and France. In 1908 he returned to St Petersburg and spent the next decade working as an illustrator for leading journals such as Golden Fleece and Argus. In 1922 he left Russia and settled in Berlin where he pursued a career as a designer for theatre and film.
